Neurosurgery Extends Its Reach via The Internet

North Andover, MA, USA -- March 1, 1999. Neurosurgery, the official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, has successfully extended its presence from print to the Internet. Recently launched, Neurosurgery-Online is a distinctive web site which offers the full-content of Neurosurgery from 1992-present, and taps into the full potential of electronic publishing.

Subscribers to Neurosurgery-Online are able to search and view the full-content of journal articles, including images, tables, text and abstracts across the Internet. Readers are given the choice of viewing scientific papers in HTML or PDF format. The benefit of PDF is that it preserves the layout and format of the original print article.

Since its release, Neurosurgery-Online has been accessed an average of 1,500 times per week. Dr. Michael Apuzzo, Editor of Neurosurgery, said "The advent of this dimension of publishing capability will change the scope of neurosurgical communication and without doubt have a global impact on the standards of the discipline. Neurosurgical publishing and the journalistic form have truly entered a new era!"

Neurosurgery-Online was developed by Aries Systems Corporation under contract to Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, publishers for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and is based on Aries' acclaimed Knowledge Finder® technology. During the product design phase, Aries placed significant emphasis on ease of use. For example, images can be viewed and downloaded at different resolutions to suit the speed of the user's Internet connection. The Knowledge Finder search technology also allows users to enter search requests in natural language and ranks retrieved articles in order of likely relevance. Access can be purchased either by subscription or by "pay-per-view".

Lyndon Holmes, President of Aries Systems noted, "When publishers migrate print products to the Internet, we are responsive to their key concerns: how to give readers a superior value-added experience, how to preserve brand identity in cyberspace and how to protect fair use of their intellectual property." Timothy Grayson, Executive Publisher responsible for Neurosurgery at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, said "Aries treated us as a unique customer and went the extra mile to ensure that this new online journal stands out from the crowd".

Since 1986, Aries Systems has successfully delivered technology that connects medical knowledge workers to the most accurate and comprehensive answers to their questions. Aries provides the navigation infrastructure that empowers all of the participants in the knowledge retrieval chain: publishers, database developers, knowledge workers and librarians.
