FOR RELEASE: Immediately Latest Release of Knowledge Finder Targets Medical Internet and Intranet Users... North Andover, MA, USA -- January 25, 1999. Aries Systems Corporation (200 Sutton Street, North Andover, MA 01845, USA) today announced the latest release of Knowledge Finder, marking the company's increased emphasis on Internet and Intranet solutions. The emergence of wide-area computing has greatly expanded the number of novice users accessing complex bibliographic databases such as MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycLIT and EMBASE Alert. The latest release of Knowledge Finder 4.0 is responsive to this trend by being a "gentle slope interface" which gives novice users immediate, high quality answers to their questions through a natural language interface; and then gradually introducing them to additional database searching utilities such as boolean operators and thesaurus browsing. Knowledge Finder 4.0 includes powerful new concept mapping tools. Search queries can be mapped to acronyms (for example, 'AIDS' expands to 'Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome'), like terms (for example, 'Heart Attack' maps to 'Myocardial Infarction'), and Pre-Exploded Thesaurus Terms (for example 'Disease' includes all thesaurus related disease concepts). Librarians and system administrators can configure the concept mapping tools to match different skill levels within their organization. Knowledge Finder 4.0 also responds to the need to connect from bibliographic databases to full-content articles in a cost-effective manner. With the new Library Holdings feature, librarians direct users to locally held journals. Alternatively, users can connect to a Document Delivery feature which allows them to order individual articles across the Internet. David Richardson, Librarian at the Whitehead Institute (Massachusetts), an early adopter of Knowledge Finder 4.0 , said "It is easier because very little bibliographic instruction is necessary for researchers to use Knowledge Finder's friendly, intuitive search environment. It is more rewarding because researchers are constantly finding the information that they need and praising the library for providing this service." Lyndon Holmes, President of Aries Systems, noted "Wide area computing means that user interfaces must be resilient to the unpredictable and variable searching skills found outside the four walls of the physical library. With Knowledge Finder 4.0, librarians can enroll users to 'learn by doing' and quickly move them up the learning curve to other searching techniques". Since 1986, Aries Systems has successfully delivered technology which connects medical knowledge workers to the most accurate and comprehensive answers to their questions. Aries provides the navigation infrastructure which empowers all of the participants in the knowledge retrieval chain: publishers, database developers, knowledge workers and librarians.
