DocuRights® to Provide eCommerce and Security for Bio-Medical Journal Articles from S. Karger AG

Langenfeld, Germany -- September 5, 2000. ARIES will soon begin offering e-commerce access to biomedical journal articles from Swiss publisher S. Karger AG. ARIES will sell, on a pay per view basis, individual articles from the publisher's journals. These will be purchased by customers via the Internet in PDF file format, using the DocuRights secure container technology from Aries Systems Corporation. The prestigious S. Karger organization publishes approximately 80 bio-medical journals, as well as around 70 book titles annually. Most of S. Karger's publications are in the English language.

Using the DocuRights solution, the customer browses one of the biomedical databases offered by Aries, currently accessible to millions of users worldwide. When the user finds an article reference and abstract of interest, and for which a DocuRights full-text PDF is available, the secured PDF is downloaded immediately to their computer across the Internet. A short free-preview of the article lets the user confirm that they want to purchase the article. DocuRights then coordinates an online e-commerce transaction, following which the full article is then available for viewing and printing by the user.

"The partnership with Aries provides us with an additional option to offer our customers, authors, and readers access to valuable research and clinical information. Our core business consists of linking the world of bio-medical science and the Aries' Knowledge Finder search engine and the electronic document delivery service help us to exactly achieve this goal. We are pleased to participate in this broad and expanding service", comments Steven Karger, CEO of publisher S. Karger.

The full text articles of publisher S. Karger reside as PDF files on the publishing house server in Basel. When a download is requested, the article is immediately forwarded as a PDF to the Aries server, where it is enveloped, registered, and secured with DocuRights protection, and sent directly to the purchaser's computer.

Upon receipt of the PDF, the customer simply provides payment information to the DocuRights server. The document can then be immediately opened and read. If the customer then distributes the document to additional individuals, the content will remain secured. Each subsequent recipient has to register anew and pay for the article.

The payment process is managed by Aries and periodically settled with the publisher, thus relieving the publisher of all e-commerce administrative details. In addition, the publisher will receive detailed statistics on document titles sold and purchasers.

As a special service, end users can receive electronic editions of tables-of-contents (eTOCs) of current issues of Karger journals. eTOCs are sent to the user's e-mail account, or to a handheld PDA. Links from the eTOC allow the user to download and purchase articles of interest.
