Overview

Imagine...
Imagine the flexibility of online database access combined with the economy, speed and convenience of CD-ROM! Your imagination becomes reality with Knowledge Server, the CD-ROM networking solution for Aries' medical reference databases for the Apple Macintosh and Windows-compatible computers.
Network Access, Anywhere, Anytime
With Knowledge Server, your Knowledge Finder® CD-ROM databases can be accessed anywhere on Novell, TOPS or AppleShare networks. Whether you're a small group sharing a single CD-ROM disc, or an entire institution using billion character databases, Knowledge Server brings the information to where you work, when you need it.
Multiple, Concurrent Search Sessions
Multiple network users (using Macintosh or Windows computers) can search the database discs at the same time. A single microcomputer server can support up to twenty concurrent search sessions. The number of concurrent users is limited only by the server hardware you decide to use. You get large computer performance at personal computer prices.
Speed and Simplicity
Because the databases are connected to your local area network, you're freed from the tyranny of telephones. Connection to the databases is simple and automatic, and can occur automatically whenever you start up your computer. Information can be sent hundreds of times faster than by modem, making searching more effective. And, of course, you don't pay for your network by the minute!
Straight-Forward Administration
Database administration becomes a "sometimes" job with Knowledge Server. The database CD-ROM discs are permanently mounted on the server. Disc security is assured, because network users never have to touch the discs.
Economical Configurations and Subscriptions
Knowledge Server configurations can be tailored to your specific needs. You buy only what you need. Knowledge Server's modularity assures you unlimited growth potential in cost-saving steps. A single network database subscription can serve many users in many locations. You pay a single, fixed annual subscription fee (tailored to the level of use you need) that gives you unlimited network access to the databases.

Equipment Requirements

Software Requirements

In addition to the Knowledge Server software from Aries Systems, you'll need:

  • A subscription to the Knowledge Finder database of your choice.
  • The appropriate network operating system software.

Hardware Requirements

Knowledge Server will work with either a shared ("peer-to-peer") or a dedicated network server. Use the table below to determine the specific configuration that's most appropriate for you.

You'll also require CD-ROM players for each CD-ROM volume that you plan to use with the server. Magnetic hard disk storage can be used instead of CD-ROM players for faster access. You'll still need a minimum of one CD-ROM player to "import" the database information from the CD-ROM discs.

You'll probably want to include at least one printer on the network. You can configure as many network servers using Knowledge Server as you need.

Compatible Server Platforms

Knowledge Server is compatible with Novell NetWare, SITKA TOPS, Apple AppleShare and FileShare, Artisoft LANtastic, and other network operating systems and platforms.

Open Systems Networking

Knowledge Server has been designed to fit within your networking environment. This means that you can choose the network architecture and components that best suit your needs - Knowledge Server is compatible with many popular network environments.

To help you develop your network, Aries Systems has developed a comprehensive report and guide to designing and planning a CD-ROM network, based on this open systems concept.

Health care providers and academic health science institutions can receive this report at no charge, by requesting the report on your organizational letterhead. Other requests should be accompanied by US $25.

Please contact Aries Systems or your authorized Knowledge Finder dealer for details.
