Overview
The HealthSTAR bibliographic database provides access to the published literature of Health Services Technology, Administration, and Research, produced cooperatively by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the American Hospital Association (AHA). The database contains citations (with abstracts if available) to journal articles, monographs, technical reports, meeting abstracts, and papers, book chapters, government documents, and newspaper articles from 1975 to the present.

HealthSTAR became available in 1996 through the merging of the HEALTH: Planning and Administration database and the HSTAR (Health Services/Technology Assessment Research) database. The database focuses on both the clinical (emphasizing the evaluation of patient outcomes and the effectiveness of procedures, programs, products, services, and processes) and the non-clinical (emphasizing health care administration, economics, planning and policy) aspects of health care delivery.

HealthSTAR is available on CD-ROM and via the internet using Aries' Knowledge Web®.

Database Contents

Contents	MEDLINE: 1975-present, CATLINE®: 1985 to present, and unique records specially indexed from three sources: Journal articles with emphasis on health care administration, selected and indexed on an ongoing basis by the AHA. A small collection of retrospective monographs (1975-1981), technical reports, and theses from the National Health Planning Information Center (NHPIC). Journal articles, technical and government reports, meeting papers and abstracts, and books and book chapters on health services research, clinical practice guidelines, and healthcare technology assessment selected and indexed on an ongoing basis through NICHSR.

Features

Knowledge Finder® offers you what may be the most advanced bibliographic retrieval technology available today. Your search statements can include sentence-style natural language queries - you don't need to learn a complex command language. Probabilistic indexing and retrieval algorithms find not only precise matches to your search request, but also "close" and "nearby" matches. Search results are ranked based upon likelihood of relevance to your request, reducing the amount of time you spend scanning search results. Expert search formulation tools simplify the searching process. Intelligent stemming and expansion of search words automatically increase the scope and retrieval of a search. On-screen controls let you define the degree of precision and recall to be applied to a search. You can use all Knowledge Finder retrieval and citation management tools with the HealthSTAR CD-ROM.

The HealthSTAR database includes a full implementation of the MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) vocabulary, including cross- references, hierarchical heading (Tree) structures, and "explosion" searching.

CD-ROM Edition
HealthSTAR is now available on 3 CD-ROMs with Knowledge Finder, and is updated four times per year. Each CD-ROM disc contains between 5 and 11 years of HealthSTAR information. This lets you tailor chronological coverage to your specific need.

  Flexible Subscriptions

HealthSTAR is available in personal, institutional or network subscriptions. All subscriptions include the MeSH thesaurus, Knowledge Finder software and updates, documentation, and telephone support.

'Years of Coverage' and '# of Discs' applies to 1998 edition.
