FOR RELEASE: Immediately Full-Text Medical Journals coming to the Web with Knowledge Finder® and Knowledge Web® from Aries Systems. Philadelphia, PA -- 23 May 1998. Aries Systems Corporation (200 Sutton Street, North Andover, MA 01845, USA) today announced a major new initiative in electronic publishing of full-text medical journals on the World Wide Web. Working in conjunction with societies, publishers and other organizations in medicine, Aries has offered full-text CD-ROM publications of medical journals since 1994. Sophisticated fuzzy-logic search technology and high-quality image and table content presentation have become a hallmark of these publications. Aries' Knowledge Finder software makes these publications available to both WindowsTM and Macintosh® users, and provides both single-station and local area network accessibility. Almost 20 different full-text medical titles are available today with Knowledge Finder, including The New England Journal of Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine. Now, beginning in the latter half of 1998, important medical journals will become available on-line with Knowledge Web and Knowledge Finder, Aries' powerful access and presentation software. The first journals to be offered, each at their own distinctive Web site, will include Neurosurgery - official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, published by Williams & Wilkins; Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery - American edition; and Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Other titles are also expected to be announced shortly, with planned availability on-line by the end of 1998. Knowledge Web on-line journals provide both on-screen browseable content, as well as downloadable and printable PDF (Portable Document Format) images of articles. On-screen browsing is optimized for interactive content access (table-of-contents and fuzzy/Boolean searching) and viewing (article text, tables, images, and linked MEDLINE abstracts). Downloadable article page images will let users conveniently obtain article contents in traditional formats, without the limitations of Web browser printing formats. Knowledge Web allows the user to dynamically select the resolution quality (and associated download file size) of transmitted PDF articles. Lower resolutions can be selected when using slower modems, while higher quality page images can be selected when high-bandwidth transmission is available to the user. Content access will be available through subscriptions for both individuals and institutions, as well as by "pay-per-view". Individual articles may be ordered for downloading, with immediate electronic delivery after real-time financial transaction processing. Knowledge Web's secure document delivery technology will protect individuals, institutions and publishers from unauthorized recopying and redistribution of downloaded article page images. Lyndon Holmes, President of Aries Systems, noted, "Knowledge Finder technology and Aries' business strategy offer a unique partnership opportunity for publishers today. While Aries harnesses the potentials of technology, our publisher partners are able to maintain their focus on their important publishing activities. More importantly, we recognize the need for publishers to maintain control of their valuable content, and that these electronic publications are the assets of the publishers."
