DocuRights® enhanced to support Linux, reinforcing Aries' strategic focus on Digital Rights Management for STM (Scientific, Technical and Medical) publishers

North Andover, MA, USA -- April 10, 2001. Aries Systems Corporation has announced enhancements to its DocuRights "secure container" technology that extends support for PDF Digital Rights Management to Linux platforms, in addition to the DocuRights support already available for Windows and MacOS operating systems.

DocuRights is the only CS/DRM (Content Security/Digital Rights Management) solution that focuses exclusively on the needs of Scientific, Technical and Medical publishers. PDF files are secured in an encrypted DocuRights envelope that "calls home" to obtain access permissions. The initial development of the patented DocuRights technology began more than four years ago and includes features that meet the needs of the STM community, such as: IP-based access authentication, timed free previews, and publisher-defined "fair use" counts.

Richard Wynne, Director of Sales and Marketing at Aries, commented: "Other DRM vendors have no interest in supporting Linux or MacOS because of their focus on eBook platforms. However, in our target markets a significant percentage of scientific literature is accessed on MacOS and Linux platforms, hence our unique commitment to these environments for PDF rights management. In particular, Linux is viewed as an attractive and inexpensive operating system solution in the academic community - DocuRights for Linux will now allow publishers to distribute their secured content within academia."

Since the launch of DocuRights (http://www.docurights.com) at the 1999 Frankfurt Book Fair, the technology has been used with content from a growing number of leading STM publishers, including the Massachusetts Medical Society (publishers of the New England Journal of Medicine), Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Humana Press, BMJ Publishing Group, Elsevier Science, MIT Press, Hogrefe-Huber, Mary Ann Liebert, Shattauer GmbH, and S. Karger.
