Knowledge Finder
at the Whitehead Institute

The Whitehead Institute The Whitehead Institute is a non-profit, independent basic research and teaching institution. It is recognized worldwide for pathfinding programs in cancer and AIDS research, developmental biology, structural biology, infectious disease, and genetics. Its mission is two-fold:

The Whitehead Institute exists outside the boundaries of a traditional academic institution. Yet, through a teaching relationship with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it offers all of the intellectual, collegial and scientific benefits of a leading research university.

Knowledge Finder® has been an integral part of the Whitehead Institute Library's information resources since 1989. Now deployed through Aries Systems Corporation's Knowledge HostTM client-server architecture, the MEDLINE and EMBASE® Alert reference databases are available to the Institute's scientists and reseachers from office, laboratory or home.

David Richardson, Librarian at the Institute, comments:

"Knowledge Finder has had two enormous impacts here at the Whitehead Institute at MIT in the last 9 years:

  1. Paraphrasing our Director, "the science is better" now that every scientist has access to the scientific literature from his own computer.
  2. My professional life as the Librarian of the Institute has been made both easier and more rewarding.
It is easier because very little bibliographic instruction is necessary for researchers to use KF's friendly, intuitive search environment. And it is more rewarding because researchers are constantly finding the information that they need and praising the library for providing this service. The most frequently heard comment here is "I cannot understand why more people aren't using Knowledge Finder "."
